So quite some time ago I was lost in the sea of DIY known as Pinterest, looking for cheap and easy things I could try to make and stumbled across shower bombs. My fiance and I both suffer from cruddy sinus issues from time to time, on top of sometimes we just feel congested, me being the awesome person I am, decided to give this a little whirl! It seemed simple enough, and only required a few ingredients. I think the most expensive one was the Vick's VapoRub, honestly, I think it came in around four dollars, or just a little more.
I had purchased the generic brand after I scored the VapoRub from a clearance basket at our local grocery store, deciding that if I was going to try this and mess up, I'd sure rather do it with a generic, less expensive version of the VapoRub. The ice cube trays, which are curved in the bottom were a dollar at Dollar General, and everything else was pretty inexpensive over all.
First I measured out the corn starch and baking soda and added them to the bowl, then it called for a little water to moisten the powder. I didn't take a picture of that because I think everyone knows what water looks like. At least I hope everyone does.
Now let's just take a moment to pause here, because for some reason before or just after I added the tiny bit of water, I used my hand to mix the powders together. I don't remember exactly the reason, or I might have been testing to see how well it held together when pressed. Can I just tell you, if you are one of those people that enjoys oddly satisfying sensations, you need to throw some corn starch and baking soda in a bowl and play with it! It was the coolest feeling ever, and I actually ended up just playing in it for probably ten minutes because it just felt so smooth and silky, and it stayed cool to the touch. I have considered just throwing a table spoon of each together just to play with from time to time. Seriously. Okay, moving on.
After I was done getting my touch sensory overload handled, I added a couple drops of green food coloring, and one drop of blue, just to give it that mint chocolate chip green tint to it, then added the specified amount of VapoRub to the mix and began mixing it by hand again. Still a really odd and neat sensation of mixing the two textures together, I have to say.
I packed the mixture into my little ice cube trays and put them into the freezer as the instructions dictated and waited. . and waited. After the specified amount of time I pulled them out and carefully popped each one out of the tray by applying pressure to one side of each "cube" and they slid out somewhat nicely. Some weren't packed as tight as they should have been and crumbled on the removal. I just gathered the crumbly bits together and packed them back in and refroze them later. They definitely were VapoRub alright, there was no doubt there. It was all I could smell, in the air, and my hands spent the rest of the day smelling of the stuff! I put them in a mason jar and stashed it on my bathroom counter for our easy usage, just to keep them from hopefully drying out and crumbling apart on us.
PINTERESTING? No. I'd save myself the trouble of doing this again, seriously. The bombs up close were over powering, but they say to put it on the shower floor next to the drain so when it starts dissolving the slipperiness from the VapoRub doesn't cause you to slip in the shower. We could not smell them in the shower at all. We tried setting it all over the shower in different places, on the ledge of the tub once it got wet, up in our shower caddy so the steam would rise up around it. Nada. Nothing. We got absolutely no benefit from it, at all. I still want to try dropping it in a stopped up sink full of boiling water and dropping a towel over my head and doing steam that way to see if it works, but since it was summer, I just wasn't in the mood to voluntarily boil myself. It really wasn't worth the hassle, and didn't live up to the hype I found all over people's blogs. Definitely won't repeat.
